Meet the Baltic Research Institute Teams

About The BRI

The Baltic Research Institute has recently been started by the senior director, Dr. John Dyer. The BRI was started up for the students to take control of what they want to do in the school; this is an exciting opportunity that hasn’t yet been started anywhere else.

Along with the senior director, there are two student co-directors, Eleni Liami and Shane Conlon. Their role within the institute is to guide their fellow students through their work and plan out the objectives for all the departments.

There are five departments that serve as an overall work experience for each student, who all have roles, and will become a reference at the end.

The Five Departments

Communications

The first department of BRI is communications, this group is in charge of everything that is published about the BRI and inter-communication between the departments. The head of this sector is Shane Conlon who oversees everyone else within the department.

The head of publications for this is Connor Davidson, mainly specialising in supervising the journal and editing the format. Within this small part, Mia Dalkin is the editor in chief of the written content of the journal.

Along with the journal there is a online blog that which is under constant supervision from Martyna Skorek - the person writing this.

Another online section is the podcast, written and hosted by Elizabeth Evans and Sophie Mossman.

The last section is the social media pages that will involve small snippets of what the institute is doing, this will be run by Samrudi Swain on Instagram, Twitter, and facebook. Samrudi will also be overseeing the overall website dedicated to the Baltic Research Institute.

Within these small sectors there will be other students who are in charge of their own specialist sections in the journal, blog, website and podcast.

Education and Outreach

The next department is the education and outreach team that is in charge of events that happen inside and outside of the school building; the head of this department is Eleni Liami.

The education sector is run by Sara Mills and Natalia Witkowska who plan various events in the school such as, primary school visits, museum trips, etc.

The outreach team is managed by Lauren Doyle, Aaran Verkade and Patrick Weston who widen participation of partners and businesses who would like to be involved with the BRI.

There will be also a exhibit room in our school which will be looked over by Jenny Hollywood; this will involve museum-like exhibits and a library which the students will have access to. All of these sections will also have other students with different jobs that help the department grow and develop.

Business and Partnership

Another important department within the institute is the Business and Partnership sector which is run
by Chloe Ashton.

Within this section of the BRI, Eliza Sampson is in charge of any monetary situations from any departments.

Law and Safety is managed by Katana Rumble, this sector checks all the guidelines and makes sure that everything is ran legally.
Alike the other groups, this department has also team members that help out with looking thing up and monitoring money.

Advanced Manufacturing

The next department that I am going to talk about is the advanced manufacturing department that is coordinated by Haviel Metivier, he overlooks the two teams within as well as completing any reorganisations of materials.

The head of product development is Kathryn Bryan who plans and develops products that the institute will sell in the future to help fund the continuation of this project.

The head CAD technician and products designs is Robyn Hallop who designs the software and physical design by using the 3D printing lab. Other students involved with this will mainly focus on what the institute will sell and how to use the 3D printer.

Technical Centres

The last department is the Technical Centres run by the lab technician, Sarah - Jane Linkman. This is probably the biggest group within BRI, consisting of six individual groups within.

The first sector is sustainable development which is overlooked by Cyndi Cousins, this part of the overall team looks into current problems with how the world is treated, as well as how to preserve the future.

Model organisms is the next section which is run by Jamie Axworthy, this team is in charge of planning new designs for the habitats of the animals that we keep in school.

They are also involved in the animals development and behavioural patterns. To this sector there are two sub-groups; for terrestrial organisms, Josh Lythgoe is in charge of his small team who look into a variety of things involved in animals that live on land. Aquatic organisms is another small group ran by Val Clarke who looks into organisms that live in water.

Jack Sands is in charge of the molecular biology sector who look into biological molecules, mainly DNA and proteins and how to sequence them.

The last but not least team is microbiology, this group is overlooked by Joanne Pimblett. They look into microorganisms and the ability to maintain them in a restricted area.

That's all for today. We will soon be setting up our personal website along with social media which you all will be able to follow to get quicker and more regular updates about the Baltic Research Institute.
